SMS is as popular in the Netherlands as anywhere else, according to the milestone which KPN attained last year. In the last week of November KPN processed its 2 billion text message.
2007 was a very successful year for SMS overall, and the Dutch Operator has never processed as many text messages as last year. In 2003 the yearly amount of SMS-traffic already crossed the boundary of 1 billion text messages, which means that in 4 years time the yearly use of SMS has doubled.
KPN introduced Short Message Service in 1995. At 'the Museum of Communication' in The Hague nobody really knows who sent or received the first text message or what was the content', says Marlies Dingenout, marketing coordinator at KPN. However, 13 years ago people sent about 0,4 text messages a month per person, but in 2003 this number increased to 29 messages already, and last year it was even 41 messages. Most of the messages are sent by young people. When they turn 21 they have already received a quarter of a million e-mails and text messages, according to a Dutch ICT-service provider.
